Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
