The Pharaoh said to the people around him, "He is certainly a skillful magician. 34 He wants to expel you from your land through his magic. What is your opinion?" 35 They said: "Detain him and his brother for a while and send forth heralds to the cities 36 to bring every knowledgeable sorcerer' 37 So the magicians were brought together on a particular day at a set time 38 The people were asked, 'Will you assemble? 39 That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?" 40 Then, when the sorcerers came to Pharaoh, they said: 'Shall we receive a wage if we win' 41 He said, “Yes, and you will then become close to me.” 42 (Moses) asked the magicians, "Cast down what you want to". 43 So they cast down their ropes and staffs, and said, "By Pharaoh's honour, we shall surely win." 44 Then Moses threw down his staff, and lo, it swallowed up their conjurations. 45 Then the magicians fell prostrating in adoration, 46 saying: "We (now) believe in the Lord of the Universe, 47 the Sustainer of Moses and Aaron!" 48 Said Firaun, “You accepted faith in him before I permitted you! He is indeed your leader who taught you magic; so now you will come to know; I swear, I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet from alternate sides, and crucify all of you.” 49 They said: no harm! verily unto our Lord we are to return. 50 Behold, we [but] ardently desire that our Sustainer forgive us our faults in return for our having been foremost among the believers!" 51
