A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
