Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
