The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 We shall facilitate the path to bliss 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
