And recite to them the tiding of Abraham 69 When he asked his father and his people: "What do you worship?" 70 They said: "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them." 71 Said he: "Do [you really think that] they hear you when you invoke them, 72 Or, benefit they you or hurt they you? 73 They said, 'Nay, but we found our fathers so doing.' 74 Abraham said, "Have you really thought about what you have been worshipping, 75 and what your grandfathers worshipped 76 are my enemies? Not so the Lord of the Universe. 77 "Who created me, and it is He Who guides me; 78 "Who gives me food and drink, 79 And when I sicken, then He healeth me, 80 And He Who will cause me to die, then give me life; 81 "And who, I hope, will forgive me my faults on the day of Judgment. 82 “My Lord, bestow me the command and join me with those who deserve your proximity.” 83 and grant me an honourable reputation among posterity, 84 and place me among those who shall inherit the garden of bliss! 85 And forgive my father. Lo! he is of those who err. 86 and do not put me to shame on the Day when all shall be raised from the dead: 87 the Day when wealth and sons will be of no avail, 88 but only he that brings to Allah a sound heart will (attain to success)." 89 When Paradise shall be brought near to the God-fearing 90 and Hell shall be revealed to the misguided, 91 It will be said to them: 'Where is that you worshipped, 92 Besides Allah? Can they help you or yet help themselves? 93 The idol worshippers, the idols, the rebellious ones, 94 and the hosts of Iblis - all together. 95 They shall say, as they dispute there one with another, 96 they will say, "By God, we were in clear error 97 When We held you (false gods) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists); 98 It is none but those steeped in guilt who led us into this error, 99 We have no intercessors now, 100 And not a devoted friend. 101 But if we could but once return, we would be of the believers. 102 Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 103 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 104
