Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
