And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers. 139 When he ran to the laden ship, 140 He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers, 141 [and they cast him into the sea,] whereupon the great fish swallowed him, for he had been blameworthy. 142 And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, 143 he would certainly have remained inside the fish till the Day of Resurrection. 144 ۞ But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness, 145 And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine. 146 And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more. 147 And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time. 148 Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons. 149 Or, did We create the angels females while they were witnessing? 150 It is only because of their false invention that they say, 151 Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie. 152 Has He chosen daughters over sons? 153 What is the matter with you? How do you judge? 154 Why do you not reflect? 155 Or have you a clear authority? 156 Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful. 157 They assert kinship between Him and the angels. But the angels know that they (the liars) will be arraigned (in Hell). 158 Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him), 159 Except His chosen creatures who do not. 160 But as for you, and that you serve, 161 you shall not tempt any against Him 162 except those who will burn in Hell. 163 [The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position. 164 And verily we! we are ranged in ranks. 165 “And indeed we are those who say His purity.” 166 They used to say before: 167 "If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples, 168 We would certainly have been the servants of Allah-- the purified ones. 169 But they disbelieve in it (the Koran), but soon they shall know! 170 Our Word had already preceded Our worshipers, the Messengers, 171 That they would be helped, 172 And verily Our host! they are to be overcome. 173 So you ignore them for a time 174 And watch them and they shall see (the punishment)! 175 Do they, then, [really] wish that Our chastisement be hastened on? 176 Then, when it descends into their courtyard (i.e. near to them), evil will be the morning for those who had been warned! 177 Leave them alone for a while, 178 and see, soon they shall see! 179 Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they attribute to Him, 180 And peace be unto the sent ones. 181 And all praise is to Allah, the Lord Of The Creation. 182
