A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
