The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
