The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
