The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
