The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise, and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
