Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
