The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 And [by] the day when it displays it 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 By the soul, and That which shaped it 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and he who suppresses it will be ruined. 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
