The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who denies and turns away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
