The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
