The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it descends, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
