Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, 2 When he called upon his Lord in a low voice, 3 He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee: 4 And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir 5 who will be my heir and an heir to the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, satisfied' 6 (Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)." 7 He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". 8 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. 9 He said: My Lord! give me a sign. He said: Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to the people three nights while in sound health. 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 [And when the son was born and grew up, he was told,] "O John! Hold fast unto the divine writ with [all thy] strength!" - for We granted him wisdom while he was yet a little boy, 12 And piety (for all creatures) as from Us, and purity: He was devout, 13 And duteous unto his parents, and was not high-handed rebel. 14 Peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he will die, and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
