And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers. 139 [Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship. 140 and cast lots, and was of the rebutted, 141 Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy. 142 And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, 143 He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised. 144 ۞ But We cast him, upon the shore, and he was ill, 145 and We caused a pumpkin tree to grow over him. 146 And We sent him towards a hundred thousand people, in fact more. 147 And they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while. 148 So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons? 149 Or that have We created the angels as females, while they were present? 150 Oh, verily, it is out of their own [inclination to] falsehood that some people assert, 151 " Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars. 152 Did He choose daughters rather than sons? 153 What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement? 154 Then will you not be reminded? 155 Or have you a clear authority? 156 Bring your Book, if you are truthful. 157 And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts). 158 limitless is God in His glory, above anything that men may devise by way of definition! 159 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 160 for, verily, neither you [blasphemers] nor the objects of your worship 161 Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him. 162 Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell. 163 (Gabriel said to the Prophet): 'Each of us has a known place. 164 “And indeed we, with our wings spread, await the command.” 165 "And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!" 166 They used to say before: 167 "If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples, 168 We would be single-minded slaves of Allah. 169 But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know! 170 Already Our Word has preceded to Our servants, the Envoys; 171 That verily they! they shall be made triumphant. 172 And that certainly Our armies will be victorious. 173 So, (O Prophet), leave them alone for a while, 174 And see them thou; they themselves shall presently see. 175 What, do they seek to hasten Our punishment? 176 But when it shall descend in their court, evil shall then be the morning of the warned ones. 177 Hence, turn thou aside for a while from them, 178 And watch, for they will soon see. 179 Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they attribute to Him, 180 And peace is upon the Noble Messengers. 181 and praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being. 182
