The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the sun and its light 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 And by the night as it conceals it (the sun); 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 And [by] the earth and He who spread it 6 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
