[Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said to the chiefs around him: "Verily! This is indeed a well-versed sorcerer. 34 He would drive you out of your land through his magic; what then is it ye command? 35 They said: Put him off, (him) and his brother, and send into the cities summoners 36 to bring every knowledgeable sorcerer' 37 So the magicians were gathered together at the appointed time on the fixed day, 38 And the people were told: "Are ye (now) assembled?- 39 We may perhaps follow the religion of the magicians if they triumph." 40 And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers? 41 "Yes," he replied. "You 'will be among the honoured." 42 Musa (Moses) said to them: "Throw what you are going to throw!" 43 Thereupon they threw down their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the glory of Pharaoh, we shall prevail." 44 [But] then Moses threw his staff - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions. 45 And the sorcerers fell down prostrate. 46 They said: we believe in the Lord of the worlds. 47 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 48 [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] said: "You have believed in him before I give you leave. Surely, he indeed is your chief, who has taught you magic! So verily, you shall come to know. Verily, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all." 49 They said: "We do not care, for we are bound to return to our Lord, 50 Surely we hope that our Lord will forgive us our wrongs because we are the first of the believers. 51
