a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
