Thamud denied the messengers 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
