We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 So when he brought Our signs to them, they started mocking at them! 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Pharaoh issued a call to his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion over Egypt belong to me, since all these running waters flow at my feet? Can you not, then, see [that I am your lord supreme]? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 "Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
