a good many of olden times, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
