The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And all defilement shun! 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And children present [with him] 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
