He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 So you are after him! 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and fearfully, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 lofty and pure, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 noble and pious. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and the olive, and the palm, 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
