Kaf. Ha. Ya. 'Ayn. Sad. 1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy bestowed upon His servant Zachariah, 2 when he called upon his Lord in secret, 3 saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 who shall be my inheritor and the inheritor of the House of Jacob; and make him, my Lord, well-pleasing.' 6 'O Zachariah, We give you good tidings of a son, and he shall be called John (Yahya); a name We have never given before' 7 He submitted, “My Lord – how can I have a son whereas my wife is barren and I have reached infirmity due to old age?” 8 [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " 9 [Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound." 10 So he came from the chamber to his people, and suggested to them (by signs) to sing the praises of the Lord morning and evening. 11 (We said:) "O John, hold fast to the Book;" and We gave him wisdom right from boyhood, 12 and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious, 13 and dutiful towards his parents and was not haughty or disobedient. 14 And peace is upon him the day he was born, and the day he will taste death, and the day he will be raised alive. 15
