The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
