The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 except those that pray, 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
