The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad SAW) saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat the other third? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
