Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
