The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 And We see it nigh. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 tearing away his skin! 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their privates 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
