The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 Purify your inner self, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
