The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 While he was in the highest part of the horizon: 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
