The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Read with the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 As he bethinkest himself selfsufficient. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. ۩ 19
