Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! 1 By the clear Book, 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
