He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 you attend to him, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 And he fears, 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 noble and pious. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 olives, dates, 29 and dense orchards, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 mother, father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing and joyful, 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
