But as for anyone who chooses to remain blind to the remembrance of the Most Gracious, to him We assign an [enduring] evil impulse, to become his other self: 36 And verily they hinder them from the way, whilst they deem that they are rightly guided. 37 Until when he comes before Us he will say (to the devil): "Would to God there was a distance of the East and West between you and me, for you were an evil companion!" 38 And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment. 39 What, will you make the deaf hear, or guide the blind and he who is in clear error? 40 We shall punish them whether We take you away, 41 Or show you what We have promised them – We therefore have complete control over them. 42 Therefore hold fast to that which has been revealed to you; surely you are on the right path. 43 And lo! it is in truth a Reminder for thee and for thy folk; and ye will be questioned. 44 Yet [above all else,] ask any of Our apostles whom We sent forth before thy time whether We have ever allowed that deities other than the Most Gracious be worshipped! 45
