Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HA MIM. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 therein every wise bidding 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
