The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
