AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot, 61 he said: "Behold, you are people unknown [here]!" 62 They said: "Nay, we have come to you with that (torment) which they have been doubting. 63 "We have brought to thee that which is inevitably due, and assuredly we tell the truth. 64 "Then travel in a part of the night with your family, and you go behind them in the rear, and let no one amongst you look back, but go on to where you are ordered." 65 And We made known this decree to him, that the last remnants of those (sinners) should be cut off by the morning. 66 In the meantime the people of the city came to Lot rejoicing. 67 He said: verily these are my guests, so disgrace me not. 68 And guard against (the punishment of) Allah and do not put me to shame. 69 They said: Have we not forbidden you from (other) people? 70 He said: "There are my daughters (to marry), if ye must act (so)." 71 [But the angels spoke thus:] "As thou livest, [O Lot, they will not listen to thee:] behold, in their delirium [of lust] they are but blindly stumbling to and fro!" 72 At sunrise a dreadful Shout seized them. 73 And We turned the township upside down and rained upon them stones of heated clay. 74 Indeed in that are signs for those who discern. 75 And lo! it is upon a road still uneffaced. 76 Verily there is a Sign in this for the believers. 77 Since the People of the Forest were unjust, 78 So We took vengeance on them. Both are still there on the highway, plain for all to see. 79
