The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
