Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
