The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
