The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
