The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise, and warn. 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And your garments purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he beheld, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 over it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
