He Frowned ('Abasa)
42 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 How canst thou know, whether haply he might be cleansed, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and fearfully, 9 You neglect. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 then causes him to die and buries him, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And produce therein corn, 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
God Almighty has spoken the truth.
End of Surah: He Frowned ('Abasa). Sent down in Mecca after The Stars (Al-Najm) before Destiny (Al-Qadr)
