Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn; 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
